It's funny me reflecting upon the Radio 1 recording. I used to have it on four cassette tapes. I still feel for my poor Dad, having to abide by my vociferous demands in sitting by the stereo and not missing a second of the show as he recorded it for me whilst I bathed in that amazing atmosphere dockside.
I listened to those tapes endlessly when I got back home on the Monday morning...taking them into school and playing them to all who would entertain listening to them whilst regaling them with vivid and enthusiastic descriptions of the visuals that burned into my memory those nights.
I listened and listened and listened...always annoyed and irritated by Bates babbling on during the intro's to my favourite tunes, but still mesmerized by the images those tapes conjured in my mind and the tingles I felt all through my body.
I listened and listened and listened...until the inevitable happened...tape 2 chewed up in the machine...and me being a rather naive fifteen year old singularly failed to see the importance of copying them to another tape. Eventually all three remaining tapes went to the same chewy tape heaven that I am sure some of you used to experience back in the day.
However on reflection I would adore to hear those recordings again now. The commentary that used to irritate me so now I feel may be a magnificent comfort to hear, and will transport me back twenty years to a time of much more naivety and innocence.
Whilst I listen fairly regularly to the french radio broadcast, it never made me feel the same as the BBC broadcast, even with all its imperfections.
So there you go...memories of a generation ago and four spools of magnetic tape.
I would dearly love to feel a little of that again!

Lovely memories. I never had the opportunity as it happened there and then. Most likely feel the same way as you described.

Sorry to resurrect this, but some of us still haven't heard the proper quality BBC broadcast. The one in the database is only a 64 kbps wma file. Needless to say such compression basically destroyed the sound. Could anyone please share a better version?
