i know what you mean; the Mp7 sounds like many other Drummers from that time, because most of them share the same circuits; the only difference was (often) the housing and the diode-matrix patterns. All in all there are until today not much flexible Rhythmboxes on the market and -if- they provide a sort of flexibility, then they´re often digital and -even- not that good, related to the programming interface and the overall sound. The Mp7 fits good into a song, which was made for it, but not as a main drummer in a actual song. Nowadays has only a TR-808/909 or real drums a chance.
