Yes! You can hear the difference between real synths and VST's! Believe me, I tried enough of them together with a real one, and I have to say, emulations of vintage synths don't sound the same as the real ones! Your second point, that you find that "not 100% 2600" laughable, is your opinion. My opinion is that you can't make a descent track with one analog synth. The sounds will sound all a bit the same, because it's the same synth, and one requirement for a good track is mostly a bit difference in sounds, isn't it?
It doesn't matter if he's used analogue and/or softsynth, as long as the music is good. I'm glad I'm no hardware "nerd", or softsynth "nerd" for that matter, and having to try and figure out what synths he's using, but can just lay back and enjoy the music itself.
