Based on some quick comparisons, it's like someone has turned the higher frequency values of the 2016 LP up as the 1997 LP has more bass, and the overall sound of the 1997 releases are a bit "muddier" due to the lack of extra treble. Gotta have to listen through the 2016 vinyl from beginning to end for more conclusions.

Hmm, quite many "scratching-like" noises in Oxygene pt. 20's vinyl version... must be that off-center thing people have been talking about? Sheesh.

Based on those comparisons I personally would definitely pick the 1997 LP (if I could get my hands on one without paying an arm and a leg, that is... ).
The 1997 CD (the only version I own) sounds ok-ish, though obviously a bit louder than I'd like.
As for the 2016 samples they overdid it with the treble on the LP, and the CD is even louder than the original.

Btw. I wonder if the "Dadwater" pseudonym is something like "Alan Smithee"

In any case, I'll be digitizing the Oxygene 7-13 and 14-20 records with my PRO-JECT DEBUT CARBON DC OM-10 PHONO USB and will do some comparisons over key snippets of the former (at least).

The bass pattern (starts @ 0:11) actually sounds different on the vinyl version - on CD it sounds as if some of the notes were missing.

Listening to the vinyl rip right now. First of all thanks a lot for it of course! But the music sounds so good with some good dynamics!

I did a quick DR analysis. I haven't separated the tracks yet, but as a single track it scores a 11 instead of a 6! 11 is actually surprisingly good for this type of album! I'm really pleasantly surprised!

I got the Trilogy Ultimate Edition box nr. LE: 00162 today!

I washed them vinyls as I usually do with brand new ones.
A positive thing is that they didn't felt all magnetic and dusty when I pulled them out from their sleeves. The Oxygene 3 vinyl has got 3 small black dots on it.
So I poored meself a good dram of 12 yo GlenDronach scotch (I can't efford a 40 yo) and had a first listening of Oxygene 3.
It's a damn good album. Cool rythms and soundscapes in every track, just as a genuine Oxygene album should be.
I'm missing a bit those melodic and more catchy parts that JMJ from the past use to have.
But apart from that he is reflecting the modern electronic music of today quite well.
Part 19 has got a bit of melody with a sentimental touch to it.
He said during a pre-promotion of the album that he never intended to continue where the first Oxygene ended
but rather create a version were he composes as he did back in 1976 with the tools available today and doing this in only 6 weeks
between the Electronica concerts. So I think you have to keep that in mind while listening to this latest album.
The only problem for JMJ is that he can never be in the exact same state of mind as he was in 1976, that young kid who gave it all and really tried
to prove to the world how fantastic this new discovered type of music really is. Today he doesn't have to prove anything.
And still he manage to pull off something this great it's a hat off for the master.
At the beginning of part 20 with that crazy organ sound I think he had his Hans Zimmer and Interstellar moment.
The rest of the track is the strongest piece JMJ has ever created in centuries.
It's amazing what a few long minor chords can do to a person emotionally.

The vinyl of Oxygene 2 (7-13) sounded very nice. Except for the pops and static clicks here and there it really brought new life to this old album.
My pro-ject tube amp keeps the sound warm and nice regardless how loud the mix on the album is. It pops out a few new details I haven't noticed before.
It's just too bad they weren't black vinyls. It could be just a placebo effect but I believe they could've sounded even cleaner that way.
Is it worth the money? I say hell yes it is. There are so many far more terrible things you could do with your money.

I agree : this track is really strong. It easily makes you feel sad, but not totally. Images come to your spirit. It would fit à lot of movies or documentaries.
Warm sounds, simple chords, famous name on the sleeve, and the world can experience a great moment 👍
