Loudness war is anything but dead, the Essentials sounded godawfull pushed over the Max, and the Rarities, well we don't have anything we can really compare it to
Just got my Live in Gdansk CD, and that CD was aldo pushed to the absolute Max volume wise... Hell Light My Sky has clearly been pushed over the limit, the DVD oddly enough will give you a better sound quality when it comes to volume

Btw is there some way to compare vinyl with CD in this case or is "distortion" more or less a part of the characteristic vinyl sound?
You should at least be able to compare the LP with the older LP's shouldn't you?

No unless a extremely shitty Vinyl recording is your ideal way of comparing these different pieces

Ofcourse you can if you use two different Vinyl records on the same player, but the problem with comparing a Vinyl to a CD is that every single needle will give the sound reproduction it's own "feeling", it will never really sound the same... You can, but it's a somewhat unfair thing to do....

Well atleast we can assume that the other re-releases of some of those tracks will atleast sound a hell of alot better... They atleast can't get worse

'Happiness' is one of the best examples of Musique Concrete / atonal style I've ever heard. The other tracks are a range of styles that JMJ employed to provide soundtracks, one-off singles etc. This all culminated into Oxygene and the rest is history. To each their own, but calling JMJ's experimental music 'crap' because one doesn't like the genre is a bit harsh IMO.

I can't find ANYTHING in those tracks, saying "Jarre", and anything sounding like the start of Oxygene and forward.
If any other than Jarre made this album, you guys would call it rubbish.

I agree! Musique Concrete... what a fancy word for such rubbish noise.

Before the Internet, I was happily unaware of Jarre's projects before Oxygene.

And calling Musique Concrete noise is not really fair, if you like it that's fine, but it's still a genre of it's own... Exactly. We must not forget music is an art form and in art it is possible to do something outside of the box. Jean Michel often refers to his music as painting and it's not without reason. Art should stir emotions and if we look at an abstract painting from Appel or Mondriaan art doesn't need to represent something in the real life, something we're used to. I didn't understand Mondriaan, until someone explained what he was trying to do. This changed my perspective of abstract painting entirely.

This could also be said about the Musique Concrete, where the sound is more important than the music. What can you do with the sound of a coin rolling on a table? What happens if we play this backwards. What kind of emotions can be evoked? Miss Moon on the Metamorphoses album is a perfect example of Jarre's earliest experiments: using the sound of a waterhose as a piece of rhythm. Erosmachine's rhythm noise took a long time to create, but it works so well in Chronologie 2. In the light of Jarre's earlier work, Zoolook might be the album which is the closest to what he did at the GRM, I believe it was Jarre himself who said that.

And on a final note: let's not forget that Rendez-Vous 2, Rendez-Vous 3 and Equinoxe 5 all were composed before Oxygene came out

I once heard Rendez2 and 3 in some old Jarre work, but Equinoxe 5??? Can you be more precise?

Tell me that wasn't a telecaster and a cat on drugs.

Ok look I know it's easy to call those old pieces "rubbish" and what not?
But it's easy to forget that infact it was the dawn of age for electronic music to actually start evolving into the pop culture for real and Jarre was one of the pioneers that tried his best to create something different from others and try something more "alive" with playful characteristics rather then with machines stamping out the same patterns over and over again. What was the choice back then if you wanted to try some new electronic sounds and step aside from the mainstream? They had to use available "tools" and perhaps something in the neighbourhood of the fashion style at that time. It may sound crappy today just because artists like JMJ among others added the first pieces to the puzzle wich has formed the musical standards of all kinds of electronic music where it is today or has been for the last what...10-15-25 years?
