Nice synth,KS5,very underestimated too,presets don't do it justice whatsoever,one of the Few VA that can actually replicate a decent Minimoog type bass due to its 3osc structure
Although I will say one thing,If your gonna buy one check it out properly before you buy it,many of them are ridiculed with Bugs,many of which Novation never adressed,one of the biggest problems is the OS has a tendency to have a mind of its own,in that random parameters will change for no reason,and the LCD flashes the parameters up and you can see the values changing in front of you,so if you get one and it does that Beware!!although its not a major issues but its an indication that it may have OS probs I managed to sort mine out but stripping it and cleaning all the pots and doing a complete Flash memory reload,at the discretion of Novation Technical support,I know many other people had a problem with the Output jacks many were badly soldered with a lot of Dry joints and caused intermitten audio from the main outs,or worse case,some jacks broke off,thankfully Mine has never had that prob
they also had an issue with the clock timing,and the Arps were all out of sync(even usings its own internal clock)the timing to external devices works fine,well I had no issues at all,but there is still a tendency for them to drift using it on its own clock,which sems to have some form of Latency,that needs sorting out,its only really prominent in Performace mode and seems ok running arps in program mode,and externally syncing is fine,so if you can see past those its a good synth overall
My one real annoyance ,and probably this is the same with all novations Midi Implementation,is that they don't stick to a set Midi criteria with there control changes,for instance most synths will use 74/71 for cut off and resonance,so means that you can control any synth's standard parameters with the same CC Number,but Novation chose to use other numbers like 114 or 118 or something ,which meant that I couldn't control those from my Triton as it didn't support CC over 101,So I couldn't do any tweaking from my main sequencer controls(Ribbon/Knobs) unless I ran it via Cubase and converted the incoming data,which was a no brainer for live performance,I know its a limitation on the Triton's part ,but why the hell did Novation use this method when every other manufacturer stuck to a standard???
Apart from that I would highly reccomend using a KS4/5,there a nice synth with plenty of potential,and the good thing about the KS as with most of novations synths all the Programs retain there FX settings within Performance mode,so you can stack some huge sounds in Multitimbral mode
If you can't find a KS5 and you don't mind Using VSTs then get the V station its identical,theres no difference in Quality whatsoever,the sounds convert identicallly,although the sys exc data isn't crossplatform(which is a stupid idea)and if Like mean you wanted to use your Synth patches in the laptop,its means you've got to copy the settings over manually!!
